Whether we’re working on small renovations, large remodeling projects, or custom new builds, we take a methodical, transparent, and thoughtful approach to every residential architecture project. Our creative architectural professionals will take the time to fully understand your personality and your unique needs as we guide you through every step of your home project’s design. This collaborative process has helped us stand out as reliable residential architects in Colorado, and we will always put our best foot forward to ensure your finished design fits within your budget and aligns with your vision.
Our Process at Humble Home Architecture
At Humble Home Architecture, we act as the central coordinator throughout the entire design process. We believe in the power of collaboration with you, the builders, engineers, and everyone else on the team to generate the maximum value for your property and ensure everything stays on schedule.
We believe in honesty and transparency at every step of the process. Each project is unique, but in most instances, we follow this roadmap to success for optimal outcomes:
- Interview Phase
- Pre-Design Phase
- Schematic Design Phase
- Design Development Phase
- Construction Documents Phase
- Construction Observation Phase
Each stage is as important as the last and we cover a lot of ground in each one. Let’s dive into these phases in greater detail to reduce the surprises you may experience along the way.
Interview Phase
Before we start any work, we take the time to gain a detailed understanding of your project vision and your needs to make sure that our residential architects in Colorado will be a good fit for you. We will conduct a free 30-minute phone consultation with you to acquire initial details about the project and schedule an on-site visit for a more in-depth interview. This visit allows us to see the worksite in person, ask intensive questions about the project, and begin piecing together initial design ideas.
After these two complimentary interviews, our architects will draft and send a contract proposal to you, which we will go over with you in detail. We promise to always put your needs and priorities first and leave our ego at the door throughout all these discussions. Once the contract is refined and accepted, we’ll send an “Acceptance of Agreement” document to you and our working relationship will commence.
Pre-Design Phase
In this phase, we gather all the necessary information to create an informed design that satisfies your needs and wants and complies with local regulations. Our residential architects in Colorado will research relevant project constraints set by the zoning commission, local building departments, HOA/DRC, and other authorities, and we will use this time to gather inspiration as well.
We’ll advise you on ordering site surveys and soil reports, and our team will assemble “As-Built” measurement documents to specify the existing conditions of the house prior to remodeling. As we gather more information, we’ll collaborate closely with you to further define the parameters of the project.
Schematic Design Phase
This is where the fun begins. At this stage, the design begins to take shape as we work to ensure your project is a tangible, buildable concept. Our residential architects will work through activities like:
- Design sketching – We brainstorm and sketch conceptual investigations.
- Schematic design – We will refine the sketch concepts into coherent design options.
- Client reviews – Meeting one-on-one with you, we will present and review the schematic designs to solicit your feedback and requested changes.
- Revisions – We'll work through multiple design iterations with you, and once the schematic design is approved, we can move into the next phase.
Design Development Phase
In this phase, the design is fleshed out in significant detail, allowing us to define critical design elements like the home’s structure, mechanical considerations, and electrical needs. At this stage, our residential architects in Colorado will begin coordinating with all additional consultants as required. We’ll determine the logistical details with structural engineers, interior designers, electricians, and other professionals to fully round out the design.
After collaborating on the design, we will review these key architectural decisions again with you and revise the drawings based on your feedback and requested changes.
Construction Documents Phase
Now that all design decisions have been made, the only thing that remains is to create detailed drawings that provide all necessary information for the permitting and construction of the project. Through further coordination with your builder and consultants, we will detail and annotate the drawing set to make sure all the details of your project are implemented and communicated. After a final review with the entire team for any last comments and minor changes, we will issue the stamped permit and construction set, signed and sealed.
Construction Observation Phase
At this point, most of our work is done as your architect. However, we will remain available as a resource to you and your builder throughout the entire construction of your home project. We’ll be standing by to answer questions and perform milestone site visits. Once the project is complete, we’ll visit the site for a final walkthrough to assess the outcomes and discuss the process with you.
